About Coastal Peak Fitness

Strong bodies. Clear heads. A home place that thrives.

Coastal Peak Fitness started with a handful of early risers and late-nighters down at the Purple Field of Dreams — folk who wanted to train somewhere that felt real. No mirrors, no air conditioning, just fresh air, banter, and the odd sideways rain to keep you humble.

What began as a few outdoor sessions in the Dunbar wind has grown into something much bigger — a place where people come to move, laugh, and feel a bit more alive. The workouts matter, sure, but it’s the people that make it — the graft, the stories, the jokes, and that quiet sense that you’re part of something good. It’s not just exercise; it’s belonging — to a crew, a coastline, and a way of living that keeps you grounded.

I once watched a scientist, Dr. Lockman, from the Green Bank Observatory in the Appalachian Mountains. He discovered a clear patch in the sky — The Lockman Hole — a rare place where the usual fog of cosmic hydrogen thins out, letting us see deeper into the universe than anywhere else. He said he’d rather have called it The Lockman Window, because through it, you can look cleanly out into the vastness beyond distortion. That’s what we aim to do clear the fog and distortion with a wee bit of exercise so you can see clearly again. SIMPLE.

At the end of that interview, he said something that’s never left me: “You’ve got to take care of the home place.”

He was talking about Earth — our only home. But it hit me that we each have our own version of that too. Your body, your mind, your health — they’re your home place. The bit of the planet that’s entirely yours to look after. When you take care of that, and the world around you, everything else just makes more sense.

That’s Coastal Peak Fitness — real people, real graft, and looking after the home place, inside and out.

The CPF Ethos — Train Hard. Tread Light.

At Coastal Peak Fitness, we keep it simple: move well, live lightly, and take care of your home place — the planet, and the person who walks on it.

Strength isn’t just about muscle; it’s consistency, awareness, and how you treat yourself and the world around you. We train mostly outdoors because that’s where life actually happens — in the weather, in the wind, in the laughter between rounds. The sea and sky don’t judge your form; they remind you you’re part of something bigger.

Our ethos is about balance — building fitness that lasts, respecting the environment that supports us, and building a community that’s got your back. We believe the fitter and more grounded you become, the better you treat the world around you.

So every time you show up — for a class, a run, or a sunrise workout — you’re building more than fitness. You’re building resilience, perspective, and respect.

That’s the Coastal Peak way — train hard, tread light, and enjoy the ride.

Meet Aly

Hi, I’m Aly Ross, founder of Coastal Peak Fitness — a place built around outdoor training, good chat, and a healthy respect for the world we live in.

Before this chapter, I spent over 20 years in the finance world — a life full of spreadsheets and not nearly enough daylight. These days, I’m a CIMSPA Level 3 Personal Trainer and CSIA Level 3 Ski Instructor, with an MSc in Green Economy, a degree in Zoology, and a Business Change Towards Net Zero qualification from Cambridge University. Somewhere between science, sustainability, and sweat, I found a way to bring everything I love together.

Skiing and running have been a massive part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve taught skiing in both Canada and Scotland, and spent years laser-focused on ski and outdoor fitness — long before I ever qualified as a personal trainer. Those experiences shaped how I coach today: functional, adaptable, and built for real-world strength — whether that’s carving turns, chasing sunrise runs, or just keeping up with everyday life.

Beyond coaching, I volunteer with Wild About West Barns and Sustaining Dunbar, and take part in monthly Riverfly surveys on the Biel Water to monitor river health — doing my bit for citizen science and local conservation.

I started Coastal Peak Fitness to bring training back to its roots — outdoors, social, and full of purpose. I believe strength and sustainability go hand in hand: when you look after yourself, you’re better equipped to look after everything else.

Expect practical coaching, good tunes, plenty of banter, and a crew that’ll keep you smiling through the sweat — whatever the weather throws at us.

“If you train hard and look after your home place — your body and the planet — you’ll last the distance.”

Sustainability Commitment — Taking Care of the Home Place

At Coastal Peak Fitness, we believe sustainability starts with how we live every day — how we move, what we consume, and how we treat the spaces we’re lucky enough to use.

We train outdoors because it reminds us what’s worth protecting. The coastlines, fields, and parks we move through are part of our identity. That’s why we make an effort to do things the right way — cycling to sessions, reusing and repairing equipment, cutting waste, and supporting local wherever possible.

But sustainability isn’t just about the planet — it’s about people too. Your body and mind are your personal ecosystem, your own home place. When you take care of that, you live lighter, think clearer, and create a positive ripple effect in your community.

We’re not perfect — no one is — but we’re trying. Trying to make fitness meaningful, local, and lasting. Trying to make “taking care of the home place” more than just a line.

“You’ve got to take care of the home place.”

Alongside my coaching work, I have a longstanding interest in sustainability and environmental behaviour change. I’ve previously run initiatives such as the Carbon Cut Challenge to encourage climate awareness and active travel, and I continue to explore how coaching and environment shape long-term behaviour.
